The obligations for general-purpose AI models following from the AI Act became applicable on 2 August 2025. Ahead of the EU AI Act’s enforcement, the European Commission published its General-Purpose AI Code of Practice.

The code is a voluntary tool to help with compliance with the AI Act’s obligations for providers of general-purpose AI models. If a provider does not adhere to it, it must demonstrate alternative adequate means of compliance (Article 53 AI Act).

The code consists of three chapters: Transparency, Copyright and Safety and Security. Providing a concise overview of the Code of Practice, our summary talks you through the different chapters and the measures which signatories commit to implementing to comply with their obligations.
